Error: Dial-up Networking cannot negotiate a compatible set of Network protocols...
Translation: Something is wrong either under your Dial-up Networking Properties or in your Network settings.
Possible Solution #1:
Dial-Up Networking can be found under "My Computer." Right-click on the WVNET icon and go to "Properties." Check under "Server Types." If you have checks next to anything besides "Enable Software Compression" or "TCP/IP," take it out. Then click on "TCP/IP Settings." Make sure you do not have "Specify name server addresses" selected. You should have "Server assigned name server addresses" selected. Click ok to save the changes and close the window. Try connecting again.
Possible Solution #2:
Check under the "Network" settings. This can be found under"My Computer" and then under "ControlPanel" If you have IPX/SPX and NetBEUI, you should remove them. Call the Help Desk for assistance in doing this or visit our web site and follow the instuctions there.
Error: The computer is not receiving a reponse from the modem...
Troubleshooting Your Modem Tip #1:
Check the COM Port. Modems are given a port to operate off of. On some computers that same port is used by what is called a "Serial Mouse" or a mouse that uses a serial port, just like your modem does. You also probably have a COM Port that is not being used. You should check under Control Panel/Modems/Properties to see which COM Port your modem is set to use. Then check under Dail-up Networking (right-click on the WVNET icon and go to "Properties") to see which COM Port that configuration is set to use.
Troubleshooting Your Modem Tip #2:
Verify that the modem is indeed plugged in. There are probably 2 places on the back of your computer to plug in a phone line. make sure it is plugged into the one that says "Line."
Troubleshooting Your Modem Tip #3:
Makesure you have the correct modem drivers installed. If you are not certain, contact the modem or computer manufacturer and request they send you the latest drivers. If you have access to the Internet, download the drivers from the manufacturer's web site.

If you are connecting with a modem:
Dialing in Tip #1: Check under Dial-Up Networking to see if your have your TCP/IP Settings set to "Specify name server addresses." If so, change that setting to "Server assigned name server addresses."
Dialing in Tip #2: Check under Control Panel>Network. Click on TCP/IP so that it is high-lighted and then click on the "Properties" button below. Under the "IP Address" tab you should have a dot next to "Obtain an IP address automatically." Under the "DNS Configuration" tab you should have a dot next to "Disable DNS." "Gateway" and "WINS Configuration" should be clear of any settings and/or numbers.
If you are connecting through a LAN (Local Area Network):
Contact your network administrator. It is possible that your local network is experiencing problems. They will then contact WVNET if there is a problem with their connection.
