Mac OS History
This is intended to give you a better idea of which operating system you might have.
OS 7-7.6
Before Summer of 1997
To connect to WVNET's Internet dialup service, you must have OS 7.5 or higher. Macs with this operating system use ConfigPPP and Mac TCP for their configuration.
OS 8.0-8.1
Summer of 1997-1998
The original iMacs (August 1998) came with OS 8.1
features the Internet Setup Assistant.
Pertinent control panels: "PPP" for dialing and "TCP/IP" for DNS settings.
OS 8.5-8.6
September 1998 - mid 1999
features the Internet Setup Assistant.
Pertinent control panels: "PPP" is now called "Remote Access" and "TCP/IP" still used for DNS settings.
OS 9.x
Most current version of the classic Mac OS
features the Internet Setup Assistant.
Pertinent control panels: "Remote Access" and "TCP/IP."
Note: users with the AirPort wireless networking will not use Remote Access, but will use the Airport Admin Utility to set up their configuration. WVNET does not offer documentation for this at this time. Go to Apple's Web site for more information on the AirPort.
OS X
Current
Much different than the previous Mac OS, but still user-friendly. Go to Apple's Web site for more information.
