FTP Links from Online Auctions

Back to Web Space and FTP

You are probably familiar with some kind of online auction, be it ebay, amazon.com or any number of others out there. Bidding on items is the easy part, but when it comes to auctioning an item itself, it gets a little trickier.

Auction sites typically let you enter in the information about your item, such as the title and description. But in order to have a picture of the item appear with your auction, you need to have some web for your picture to reside. This is something that you can use your WVNET web space for.

When you scan in a photograph of your item or take a picture of it with a digital camera, you already have it stored on your computer.

The next step is to send or FTP (file transfer protocol) your image to the server---to your web space. Before you go to ebay and write out the description of your item, you should first send your picture over to your web space, so that you know the exact web address of your image before you enter your auction information.

The address of the image will probably be something like this:

http://myweb.wvnet.edu/~abc00000/myimage.jpg.

Where "abc00000" is the actual username of your account..

That is what you type in the line of the ebay form that says:

Enter the image URL:

Amazon.com and other auctions have similar requirements. Visit your favorite auction's site for more information.
