Listserv Discussion Lists
About
Do you need to have an on-going email discussion with a group of people, where each person's comments are sent to every person in the group? You could do this with a long list of addresses in your email, but there is a much easier way. L-Soft's LISTSERV ® software manages all aspects of your email group including subscriptions, distributions and more. If you are a WVNET affiliate, please feel free to request a new discussion list.
Design a List
Some things to think about before you request a new list:
- Usefulness: There are different types of lists. Announcement lists may allow only one or two users to post to the list. Discussion lists will allow all the list subscribers to post to the list. Discussion lists can be public (anyone can subscribe) or private (only the owner of the list can subscribe users to the list).
- Listname: The listname is used by the subscribers to send mail to the list. A listname of more than 20 characters is not practical. Users need something meaningful and easy to remember. We request that all listnames end in "-L". Mail sent to the list will be addressed to "
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
".
- List Description: The list description is used to document the purpose of the list. This may come in handy if users get off topic. A list description is required.
- List Owners: At least one list owner is required and at least one owner must be a WVNET affiliate. List owners are responsible for managing the list (e.g. handling questions, problem subscriptions, etc). It is the list owner's responsibility to keep a valid email address as the owner. Any list without a valid owner's email address will be removed.
- Archiving: Archiving saves a copy of every piece of mail for later review.
If you have any questions or comments please send e-mail.
Request
Request a Discussion List
Fill out this form and submit it to request the creation of a new discussion list. Detailed instructions
follow the form. You will be notified once your request has been processed. It may take up to one week for your list to be processed.
Instructions
- Enter your name, institution, email address, us mail address, and phone number. We may need to get in touch with you prior to your list being created.
- Enter the List Name. This name will be used to send mail to your list. The following characters are allowed in the list name (a-z, 0-9, -, _ ). Listnames cannot be longer than 20 characters. We request that all listnames end with "-L".
- Enter the List Title. The list title is a single line which identifies the list. It is used on the "from:" line of all list messages.
- Enter the list owner's e-mail address and personal name separated by a single space. For example, myid@host.name.net James Smith.
- Decide if the list should have archives. Archiving saves a copy of every piece of mail for later review. Most lists do not need archiving.
- Who should see the list? Confidential set to "Yes" hides the list from everyone. "No" allows anyone, world wide, to see the list.
- Where do you want to send replies? For discussion lists, replies typically go to the list.
- Who can review your list? Private indicates only subscribers can review the list.
- How is membership managed? Open allows anyone to add or delete themselves to or from the list. By Owner means that users are not allowed to subscribe, but their request is forwarded to the owner. Closed indicates only the owner can add and delete.
- Who can post to the list? For announcement lists, only the owners or moderators should post. For discussion list, subscribers should be able to post.
- If the list is to be moderated, enter the moderator's email address. All mail sent to the list will need to be approved by the moderator before it is sent to the list.
- Enter the description of the list. There is a 200 word maximum. This will document the purpose of the list.
- If you want the list to be identical or similar to an existing list, please indicate the existing list to copy.
