Telecommunications
The Telecommunications group is responsible for all aspects of networking and communications at WVNET. These duties include, among other things, the following:
- Installing, maintaining, and upgrading communications devices including but not limited to routers, switches, hubs, CSU/DSUs, dialup modems, etc. from such vendors as Cisco Systems, NBase-Xyplex, Cabletron Systems, US Robotics (3COM), Bay Networks (Nortel), etc.
- Connecting all WV higher education schools, all WV K-12 schools, and the statewide network to the Internet (the latter handled jointly with IS&C in Charleston). This includes the networking side of the dialup modem services WVNET provides to its approximately 10,000 dialup customers.
- Continually researching new aspects of networking/communications and improving skills with current technologies including ATM, Frame Relay, copper and fiber cabling, TCP/IP, wireless/mobile technologies, voice/video, etc., in order to provide better services over time.
- Continually monitoring this statewide communications network and performing network management with the assistance of the Computer Operations staff in order to minimize network downtime and maintain a high quality of service. This includes working closely with such vendors as Verizon West Virginia, Citizens, and Qwest, among others.
- Working closely with the other Systems & Operations groups to ensure their systems have reliable network connectivity.
- Installing, maintaining, and upgrading desktop PCs and peripherals at WVNET -- both hardware and software -- including such items as printers, scanners, etc.
- Installing, maintaining, and upgrading the internal phone system at WVNET.
- Installing, maintaining, and upgrading the physical wiring at WVNET related to networking and communications (e.g., twisted-pair copper, fiber, etc.). Our staff remains on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to deal with network emergencies, assuring that our services remain available and that the network is as reliable as possible.
