Systems Programming
Responsibilities:
- Install, maintain and support operating systems and system services on Linux-based servers, Windows servers and Unix systems, and systems support for OpenVMS platforms both locally and at various West Virginia state colleges. More than 100,000 West Virginians directly benefit from this support.
- Provide timesharing services, Tivoli network backup services, program development tools, database systems, statistical analysis tools, and large-scale administrative applications.
- Support Internet services which allow WVNET users throughout the state to communicate with people all over the world. We provide email service for more than 50,000 people, processing more that 500,000 mail messages per day with state-of-the-art virus and spam filtering. Our Webservers host over 10,000 personal Webpages, in addition to hosting Web pages for state and educational agencies throughout West Virginia. We also host over 800 Listserv Discussion Lists, some of which have more than 10,000 subscribers.
- Develop and maintain the OZ problem tracking system, which allows users to report problems and get help from our technical staff. The system includes a searchable Knowledge Base that assists in problem resolution. OZ is used by WVNET to track state-wide problems, and by other state instituions for private problem management.
- All of these services are available to West Virginia educational institutions, state government and non-profit agencies. In most cases we offer better service at a lower price than you can get from private ISPs.
Our customers include higher education institutions, K-12 schools and administrative agencies, state government agencies, and faculty, staff, students, and others affiliated with education and government around West Virginia.
Our dedicated staff is on-call day and night, 365 days a year to deal with system emergencies and assure that our services are as reliable and available as possible. We are very proud of the work we do.
